The Mystery Science Theater fan who made me mute the movie

At our last Bad Movie Night, this guy who was visiting said my constant riffing was drowning out the actual badness. He told me to let the movie breathe for a minute before jumping in with a joke. I tried it on the next flick we watched, some 80s horror thing with terrible dubbing, and honestly the silence made the cheese funnier. Now I save my comments for the really dumb moments, like when the alien looks like a shower curtain. Has anyone else had to dial back their commentary to keep the group vibe right?

Did you notice if the other people in the group seemed to enjoy the quieter approach, or was it mostly your own take that it worked better? I've been in groups where one person's silence makes everyone else feel they need to fill the gap, which can get messy. The shower curtain line sounds like a keeper, but maybe you can also experiment with pointing out things without cracking a joke, like just saying "watch the hands" and letting people see it themselves.
