Used to just blast the back of the neck with the spray bottle and a razor comb. Three weeks ago a client told me her regular barber uses a steamed towel first, and now I do that every time. Anyone else find a simple trick that cut your cleanup time in half?

For 5 years I only used these high end cordless clippers, thought anything cheaper would ruin my cuts. Last month my bag got stolen and I had to borrow a cheap Wahl from a buddy to finish the day. Rant: My clippers froze up mid-fade on a paying customer yesterday

I was doing a skin fade on a regular at my shop in Austin and my Andis Masters just stopped spinning halfway through the zero gap. Turned out the drive cap had cracked from heat after 4 months of heavy use, and I had to finish with my backup Wahl Seniors while the guy sat there for 15 extra minutes. Any other barbers had a tool fail at the worst possible time and how do you prep for it?

Appreciation post for clipper oil over aerosol spray

I used to use that aerosol spray for my clippers but I switched to good old clipper oil a few months ago. My Oster 76s were getting hot after just 3 cuts with the spray. Now with a few drops of oil before each head, they run cool all day long. Has anyone else noticed their blades lasting longer since ditching the spray?

The barber at this shop on South Congress took his time with the hot lather and did the whole neckline with a straight razor instead of clippers, and my clients have been asking about the cleaner fade line ever since has anyone else tried switching up their neckline method?

Had to choose between a magnetic and a regular barber cape...

I finally had to replace my old cape last month after the snap button just gave out on me. Looked around and saw those magnetic capes everyone's talking about now... figured I'd try one out since I was tired of clients flinching when I snapped the collar closed. First few days with the magnetic one were rough honestly... it kept sliding off on broader guys and I couldn't get it to sit right on the neck. Switched back to a regular snap-button cape after a week and went with a heavy-duty one from a shop over in Memphis. The magnets just didn't have enough grip for the way I work... maybe they work better for stylists who do more comb work but for clipper cuts they kept shifting on me. Anyone else gone back to the old school capes after trying the magnetic ones?

Hit 500 straight razor shaves without a single nick

I hit my 500th straight razor shave last Friday and honestly I didn't think I'd make it that far. Started learning 18 months ago at my shop in Denver after an old barber challenged me to try it. First 20 shaves were rough, lots of tiny cuts and irritated skin. But I stuck with it and now I offer it as a regular service. Has anyone else set a personal milestone like this and tracked it?

Bought a fancy clipper oil for $30 and it was basically olive oil

I was at a barber expo in Cleveland last month and this vendor talked me into buying this premium clipper oil for $30. Said it would make my blades run smoother and last longer. Got home, opened it up, and it smelled exactly like the stuff in my kitchen cabinet. I tried it on an old clipper and honestly, my regular $5 Wahl oil worked better. Has anyone else fallen for a slick sales pitch at a trade show and wasted cash?

Took me 3 years to realize I was holding my clippers wrong

A customer told me my hand looked cramped and asked if I was gripping it like a hammer. I laughed it off but then I actually looked at my hand. I was squeezing the clipper so tight my knuckles were white. It explained why my wrist hurt every night and why my fades were always choppy on the left side. Rant: Client who booked for a full beard trim showed up with a 3-day stubble and got mad at me

Last Thursday I had a guy come in who booked online for a "full beard shaping and trim" but he had maybe 3 days of growth. I said hey man this is barely anything and he INSISTED I try to shape it. I did my best but he left grumbling about how I"m not a real barber. This is the third time this month someone has booked for a service that doesn't match what they actually want. Why do people think we can make magic out of nothing? Has anyone else had clients expect a full haircut with no hair to work with?

6 years of fading and I just learned I was holding my clippers backwards

So I'm at the shop last week and this kid, maybe 2 years in, asks me why I hold my clippers with the blade facing away from my body. I told him that's just how I learned. He goes "but don't your knuckles block your view of the guideline?" And I stood there for a solid 10 seconds realizing he was right. I've been using my index finger to feel where the guideline is instead of actually seeing it. Switched my grip around mid-cut and it felt weird but my fade came out cleaner than usual. Anyone else have a basic grip habit that took way too long to fix?

I popped into this little shop near Flatbush last Thursday to grab some clipper oil. The guy at the chair was using a butter knife to section hair for a fade. I asked him about it and he said his comb broke and he was improvising. Has anyone else seen some weird tool substitutions on the job?

Told to switch to a 1.5 comb for fading and I thought he was crazy

My old mentor kept saying my blend would look cleaner if I just used a 1.5 instead of the 2 guard. I finally tried it last Tuesday on a client with thick black hair and honestly the fade came out way smoother with no line. Anyone else find that dropping down a half guard makes a bigger difference than they expected?

That old guy who told me to ditch the plastic guards...

Had a fella come in last Tuesday, must have been 70 years old, silver hair slicked back nice. He sat down and said he used to cut hair in the Navy back in the 60s. Told me he never used plastic guard combs, just freehanded everything with his clippers. I laughed it off at first but he kept talking about how you get a better feel for the head shape that way. So after he left, I grabbed a mannequin head and tried doing a fade without any guards, just the blade. Messed it up pretty bad honestly, but I felt something click halfway through... like I could actually sense the curve of the skull better. Made me wonder if any of you guys have tried moving away from guards for certain cuts, and if it actually helped you improve or just made a mess?

Just had a debate with a barber at the Midwest Expo about clipper blade care...

I was at the Midwest Barber Expo in Chicago last month and got into it with this older guy who swore by soaking his blades in oil overnight. He said it keeps them sharp and rustfree... I always just wiped mine down and oiled before each cut. But he showed me my blades had micro rust spots under a magnifying glass that I never noticed. Now I'm wondering if I've been ruining my edges for years. On the other hand, leaving blades wet in oil could trap debris... so which way is actually better for blade life? Has anyone else tried overnight oil baths or found a specific method that works best?

I was on the fence about buying a professional blade sharpener for months. Finally dropped $60 on one after ruining a good pair of Wahl blades on a dull stone. Saved myself from sending out 3 sets this week and did them in 15 minutes between clients. Any other barbers here sharpen their own or still send them out?

The Saturday I fumbled 4 haircuts in a row and wanted to quit

Last Saturday started off fine, first client was a standard fade, no issues. Then the second guy came in with a picture of a style I had never even seen before, some kind of textured crop with a hard part. I tried my best but it came out crooked and he noticed right away. Third guy wanted a skin fade but his hair was way too short on one side from a previous cut. Fourth cut was just boring but I rushed it because I was already in a bad mood. By noon I was ready to pack up my clippers and go home. Ended up taking a 20 minute walk to cool off and finished the day decent. Anyone else have a day where nothing goes right?

Talked to a barber in Austin who said it was drying out his hands so bad he couldn't feel the hair texture anymore. Switched to soap and water after every cut and my grip on the shears feels way more natural now. Anybody else notice a difference with their scissors work?
