A client in Chicago told me my beard trims were too sharp and looked unnatural, so I started blending with a 0.5 guard for the last pass.

Some guys say a crisp line is the mark of a pro, while others think a softer fade looks more modern and lived-in, so where do you stand on the sharp vs. soft beard line debate?

Man, that's a tough one. I used to go for the sharpest line possible because it looked clean in the shop. But I got the same feedback from a regular who said it looked too harsh by day two. Switching to a light blend with the grain for the final pass made a huge difference. It grows out way better and just looks more natural, like you actually have a beard instead of a drawing on your face. A super sharp line can look awesome right after the cut, but the softer fade wins for everyday life.

My buddy got a super sharp line-up for a wedding last year. He looked like a million bucks in the photos that night. By the time they got back from the trip a few days later, it had grown into this weird dark shadow box around his face. He said it looked fake and he was really self-conscious about it. His barber switched him to a softer blend after that. Now his beard just looks good all the time, not just for a few hours after the cut.

Wait, he actually went to a wedding and a whole trip looking like that? That's brutal. I can't believe he didn't just hit up a barber somewhere else on the trip to fix it before the photos came out. A shadow box around your face for days sounds like a nightmare, I'd be pissed at the first barber for not warning him.
