A client told me my fades were too high and I had to rethink everything
I had this regular who came in for about 3 months, always smiling, then one day he just said 'man, your fades are starting too high for my head shape' and showed me a picture. It stung at first, but when I looked at his hairline and the shape of his crown, he was totally right. I started dropping my blend line about half an inch lower on rounder heads and suddenly my work looked cleaner. Any of you guys had a customer point out something obvious that you missed for months?

I dropped my line about 3/8ths of an inch after a barber on YouTube said most guys mess up by going too high. Switched to starting at the occipital bone and tracing with my comb instead of guessing, and it fixed everything. Once you see that natural shelf on the head it clicks real quick.

The thing about that occipital bone trick is nobody talks about how it shifts when you tilt your head back... I noticed if I lean my head back to look in the mirror while marking that line, the skin stretches and throws everything off by a good quarter inch. You gotta keep your chin level and look straight ahead when you find that shelf, otherwise you're chasing a moving target. Also worth checking if your occipital bone is more rounded or pointy... some guys have a real sharp bump there and others have almost nothing. That changes how high you can realistically go before it looks wrong from the side view.
