Chose the $40 Wahl clippers over the $120 set for my first home cuts, and my brother's fade actually came out clean
So I've been cutting my little brother's hair in my kitchen for about 3 months now. When I started, I was staring at two options at the shop: the cheap $40 Wahl kit or the $120 pro set the guy behind the counter kept pushing. I went cheap because I figured I'd mess up anyway.
Turns out the $40 one has been fine. The guard doesn't slip, it doesn't pull his hair, and I can do a decent taper on the sides. The one thing it's bad at is bulk removal on thick hair, so I do the heavy lifting with a separate $15 trimmer I grabbed later. Total spend was still under $60.
The barber who cuts my own hair said most home kits die because people clog them with hair and never oil the blade. I've been brushing mine out after every cut and putting two drops of oil on it, and it's still going strong.
Anyone here started on cheap clippers and stuck with them? Or did you hit a wall at some point and have to upgrade?
