Dropped $85 on a scissor sharpening service that made my shears worse
I sent my $200 Hikari shears to a guy in Boise who charged $85 for a "precision convex sharpening" and they came back cutting like a $20 pair from the drugstore. The bevel was all wrong and one blade had a nick in it that was not there before. I had to ship them to another shop in Dallas and pay $60 more to get the edge fixed, so that little experiment ran me $145 total. Now I only trust sharpeners who let me watch and test cut with the blade before I pay. Do you all ship your shears out or is there someone local you would vouch for in your area?
The part about "only trust sharpeners who let me watch" is mostly true but it doesn't always work when you mail shears out. If someone is in another state you can't stand over their shoulder, so watching only helps with a local guy. The real move for mail-in work is asking them to test cut on a piece of wet paper or a paper towel and send you a video before they ship back. I do that with my Konig now and the last two sharpenings came back cutting right. Also a nick in one blade is a big deal, that means they hit the edge too hard or dropped it. I would have asked for a refund on that alone, not just eaten the $85.
