Had a kid in my chair ask for the 'grandpa special' last week
Honestly, this little guy, maybe 8 years old, hops up and asks for a haircut like his grandpa gets. I asked what that meant and he said 'Just make the top look like a cloud and the sides like a sidewalk.' Tbh, it took me a second, but I realized he meant a classic scissor-over-comb top with clean clipper sides. Ngl, it made me laugh and also think about how we describe our work. How do you guys explain classic cuts to new clients?

You say it's just a haircut, but isn't the whole point that words mean different things to different people? That kid's description was way more helpful than a client just saying "short". Doesn't that show how important clear talk actually is?

Haha oh man this whole thing reminds me of my buddy Dave who used to cut hair out of his garage. One time a guy came in and just said "make me look like a dude who owns a boat" and Dave was like "what does that even mean?" The guy got all defensive and left. Meanwhile I've seen the same kid you're talking about describe his own haircut as "like a hedgehog but with gaps" and the barber knew exactly what he meant. Kids are way better at this than adults honestly. They haven't learned to be vague yet lmao. I think people get so hung up on being professional or whatever that they forget clear communication is actually pretty simple.
