Hot take: raising my chair 2 inches killed my wrist pain in 3 weeks and most of you are sitting too low
I cut hair for 11 years and my right wrist was shot, I mean aching every night to the point I could not grip a comb by Friday. About 6 weeks back a barber from Dallas came through my shop and told me my chair was set too low, so my elbows were dropping below the clipper and I was bending my wrist all day to compensate. I raised the chair 2 inches and moved my shear hand rest up a notch, and inside 3 weeks the ache was gone. I know some of you will say it is just posture hype, but I track everything and my wrist pain went from a 7 out of 10 to a 1. So raise your chair, set those elbows at or above the wrist, and stop cutting downhill. Any of you older guys changed your stance late in your career and actually stuck with it?
The part about "elbows at or above the wrist" is the thing that got me. I read a post from a dental hygienist a while back who said the exact same thing about her chair height and her wrist, and it stuck with me because she had numbers like you do. She dropped her pain a bunch too after raising her seat a couple inches. I used to think it was all about the tool or the grip, but hearing it from two different trades makes me think the setup is a huge piece people just ignore. My only question is how long it took before raising the chair felt normal, because I tried it once and felt like I was leaning over everybody for a week.
