Had a guy at a comp tell me my rub was too simple, then he tasted my ribs

At a Kansas City comp last summer this pitmaster laughed at me for only using salt, pepper, and garlic on my pork ribs. After I took 3rd place he came by my tent and asked for my recipe.

Used to be all about complex rubs with like 15 ingredients. Thought that was what made my BBQ stand out. But after a few comps where simple seasonings crushed it, I realized I was overcomplicating things for no good reason. You don't need fancy stuff if your meat prep and cook are solid. That guy learning from you is proof most people just talk big until they taste the proof. What made you stick with just salt, pepper, and garlic in the first place?
