Had to choose between a offset smoker and a pellet grill for my first competition

I finally decided to enter my first backyard BBQ competition last month over in Springfield. The big debate for me was whether to use my old offset smoker that I know inside and out or buy a pellet grill for consistency. I went with the offset because I figured the judges would taste the difference in smoke flavor. It was a rough 14 hour day babysitting the fire, but my brisket got a 7th place call in a field of 30 entries. The pellet guys seemed a lot less stressed, but their bark wasn't as pronounced on the ribs I sampled. Now I'm wondering if the convenience of a pellet smoker is worth trading for that deeper smoke profile. Anyone else made the switch for competition and regretted it?

Stick with what you know. Quick wins fade fast but real skill never goes out of style.

Are pellet grills really worth the trade off for weaker smoke flavor in competition?
