Chose between replacing the freehub body or the whole rear wheel on a customer's bike, and I regret my call
Went with the $18 freehub body swap on a 9 speed hub with 12,000 miles on it, and the pawls started skipping again 3 days later. Anyone else just tell the customer to eat the cost of a new wheel instead of gambling on a rebuild?
This is the same trap as patching a tire with 40k miles on it and acting shocked when it blows out a week later. You saved the customer 60 bucks up front and now you're eating the labor twice plus the bad look when the bike comes back. At 12k miles the rim is probably worn thin too, so the freehub was never the only thing on its way out. The move is to lay out both prices and let them pick, but be straight that a rebuild on a tired hub is a coin flip. Cheap fixes on worn out parts usually just move the cost around instead of getting rid of it.
