Dropped $200 on a Park Tool spoke tension meter and it saved a wheel build I would have botched
Last month I built up a set of 32 hole alloy rims for a customer's commuter and figured my hands were good enough to feel tension. Got the drive side done, looked fine, then I borrowed a buddy's TM-1 meter just to check and every other spoke was reading 15 to 20 kgf off from its neighbor. Turned out my "feel" was way off on the non drive side and I was about to send out a wheel that would have started popping spokes inside two months. So I bought my own meter for around $200 and it caught the same uneven pattern on my next build before I even laced the second side. Anyone else rely on a meter over feel, or do you trust your hands after enough wheels?
