Did you try the cola trick on an old steel frame or aluminum?

A buddy of mine tried the cola trick on an old Schwinn steel frame he found in a barn. He said it actually took off a lot of the surface rust, but the crank bolts were still seized solid and he had to cut them off. Would you try it on aluminum or just skip straight to the chemical stuff?
