Got schooled by a retired mechanic about chain lube

Been using wet lube year round for like 5 years. Old guy comes in with a creaky chain, sees my bottle. Says I'm basically sanding my drivetrain in the dry months. He was right. Switched to dry lube when it's not raining. Chain lasts twice as long now, no joke. Anyone else make that mistake?

Yeah it's mostly the dirt and grit that sticks to it, but the wet lube itself gets tacky and turns into a gummy paste that holds onto every bit of road dust. So you basically end up with a grinding compound wearing everything down faster.

Did the old guy actually explain why wet lube turns into grinding paste when it's dry? Like, is it just the dirt sticking to it or something else going on?
