Had a chat with a old timer at the coffee shop about wheel truing

I was grabbing coffee yesterday morning before my shift and an older guy noticed my bike helmet. He asked if I worked on bikes and I said yeah, mechanics mostly. He goes 'you know, truing wheels is more about feel than sight, you can't learn that from a manual'. That stuck with me because I've been staring at tension gauges for months and my wheels still come out wobbly. Has anyone else found that you just gotta go by touch after a while?

My dad said the same thing about fixing old truck engines.

A buddy of mine used to chase perfect readings on a dial gauge and his wheels would still ping loose after a few rides. He finally stopped obsessing over the numbers and just started going by the sound of the spokes.
