Honestly, zip ties as spoke indicators might look janky, but they actually work pretty well for a quick visual check. I've seen guys use colored zip ties on truck wheels to show if a nut is backing off just by glancing at the line-up. It's one of those redneck fixes that just makes sense if you're in a pinch and don't have a torque wrench handy.
