Just get a quality truing stand and a decent tension meter. Saves so much headache. Cheapest wheels you can build are still better than most pre-built ones in that price range. The key is getting the spoke tension even all around. I learned that the hard way after three failed attempts. Park Tool makes solid stands but the cheaper ones work fine if you're patient. Your thumbs will thank you for not guessing anymore.

Good point on the Park Tool stands but the cheaper ones do work if you're patient. The tension meter thing though, how do you even know what tension to aim for? I got a cheap one off Amazon and the readings bounced all over the place, felt like I was just guessing anyways. Is there a trick to getting consistent readings or did I just buy junk?
