Walked into a shop in Boulder and saw a mechanic using a plastic fork to set a derailleur limit

It actually worked perfectly, which is both brilliant and a little terrifying. When did we decide the $40 Park Tool alignment gauge was optional?

Check the mechanic's other tools, because that kind of hack shows serious experience. The best fixes often come from understanding the problem, not just owning the fancy tool. Makes you wonder what else in the shop is held together with creative genius.
