After 6 months of rotating two different book club formats, one finally clicked

We switched from the traditional 'discuss every chapter' approach to a 'choose three key scenes' format last spring, and our attendance jumped from 8 to 14 people. Has anyone else found that cutting the discussion scope made people actually show up and talk?

That's a smart move on keeping the scope small. My old book club tried something similar where we each brought one question about the story instead of a full review, and it turned into people just venting about their own lives for an hour. Does your new format leave enough room for people who want to dig deeper into a specific character or theme?

Oh man, that venting thing sounds way too familiar. I mean, your format would totally work if you just gave people a quick prompt to stay on track.
