I still think Hemingway's short stories beat his novels any day

My book club just finished The Sun Also Rises and everyone was raving about it. But I sat there thinking about how much more punch his short stories like Hills Like White Elephants have. You get the same spare dialogue and iceberg thing but in 10 pages instead of 250. A novel needs to earn its length, and Hemingway just drags when he stretches out. Anyone else find his short form way tighter and more effective?

My buddy said Hemingway shorts hit him harder than any novel ever did.

That's real though. Had a friend who never read anything but novels try "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" and he was blown away. Sometimes the short stuff just cuts right to the point without all the extra fluff.
