My book club just finished our 50th book and the number made me think

We've been meeting for three years and I never kept count, but our organizer sent a list and we hit 50 last month with 'The Vanishing Half'. Some members think hitting a big number like that means we should celebrate or pick a special 51st book, while others say focusing on the count takes away from just enjoying each read. Do you think tracking milestones adds to a book club or makes it feel too much like homework?

Honestly, hitting 50 is a huge deal, you should totally celebrate it. But I get not wanting it to feel like a chore.

Totally agreed, the stress of picking a "perfect" book can really suck the fun out of it. @andrew693's story about his friend's club is exactly what I'd be worried about (we've had enough arguments over normal picks, no need to add pressure). Maybe just do a "no-plan" meeting where everyone brings their favorite snack and a book they loved from the 50. That way it feels like a party but nobody has to decide anything. I'd probably show up with a bag of chips and a book I barely finished just to be difficult (that's my brand, you know?). Keeps the focus on the reading and the people, not the pomp.

Make it a low key thing then, just do a special meeting where everyone brings their favorite book from the first 50. No planning, no votes, just a casual show and tell with snacks. That way you celebrate the milestone without turning it into a whole production. I had a group hit 100 once and we almost burned out trying to pick a "perfect" book to mark it. Instead we just spent one meeting talking about what we loved and hated, it was way more fun. Keeps it about the reading not the pressure.

My friend's club made a big deal about their 25th book and it just stressed everyone out trying to pick the perfect one. They ended up arguing for weeks and it kinda killed the vibe for a bit.
