My book club nearly fell apart over a single chapter last month

We were reading 'Project Hail Mary' for our March meetup at the library in Boulder. One member argued the science was too fake while another said it was the best part, and it turned into a 45 minute debate about hard vs soft sci-fi. Has anyone else had a book club fight that almost ruined the whole discussion?

The science was too fake" is exactly what got my old group going too. That argument about hard vs soft sci-fi can be a real landmine. With Project Hail Mary, you either buy into the whole "rocket fuel made from alien microbes" thing or you don't. I've seen groups split over smaller stuff like whether it's okay for a character to survive a vacuum in a spacesuit for a few seconds. It's funny how one person calling something "unrealistic" can make someone else double down and say that's what makes it fun. Did you guys ever find a middle ground, or did the argument just fizzle out?

My book club in Denver had a similar blowup over the ending of "The Martian" when one member insisted the dust storm at the start was scientifically impossible. It got so heated we spent the next meeting agreeing to disagree and moved on to a cozy mystery just to keep the peace.
