My book club split over a character's moral choice and I didn't see it coming

Last month we read a thriller where the main character lied to protect her sister, and half the room called her a hero while the other half wanted her in jail, which blew my mind because I thought the whole point was the lie itself. Has anyone else had a debate where the real fight was about the author's intent vs. what you'd personally do in that situation?
