My sister said she skips every book club pick she didn't vote for, and I can't stop thinking about it
We were driving back from Thanksgiving in Ohio and she mentioned she hasn't finished a single pick since March because she only reads the ones she nominated. I said that kind of defeats the point of a book club, and she just shrugged and said why waste 300 pages on someone else's bad taste. Now I'm sitting in our next meeting watching half the group nod along to a pick I know nobody actually read, and I'm wondering if we're all just faking it. Do your clubs actually enforce finishing the book, or is everyone quietly skimming like mine?
Watching half the group nod along to a book nobody read would drive me nuts too. My club has the same problem, we picked a 500 page history book in September and I'm pretty sure only two people made it past chapter three, but everyone shows up with opinions anyway. It's like we're all performing for each other instead of actually talking about the book. Your sister is blunt but at least she's honest about it, which is more than most people in my group can say.
