Our book club keeps calling the main character in 'The Great Gatsby' a self-made man
I've heard three people in our group say Gatsby pulled himself up by his bootstraps, but the book shows his money came from crime and old connections. This matters because it changes the whole point about the American Dream being a lie. Has your group had this mix-up?

Yeah, you see that everywhere, like with influencers pretending they started from zero lol.

Funny you mention that, my cousin's always going on about how he built his landscaping business from nothing. Turns out his dad fronted the cash for the first two trucks and all the gear. People love that bootstrap story but rarely check the fine print. Does your book club argue about other stuff like that?
