Our club read 'The Road' and I'm the only one who thought it was hopeful

Everyone said it was the most depressing book ever, but I finished it thinking the man's love for his son was the whole point. The last paragraph about the 'brooks of trout' felt like a clear sign things could get better. Has anyone else read a book where they totally missed the popular feeling?

Yeah, I felt that way about "Of Mice and Men." Everyone talks about how sad the ending is, but I always saw it as George saving Lennie from a much worse fate. The mercy in it hit me harder than the tragedy.
