Serious question, did our club's 10 page limit actually make our debates better?
We used to pick doorstopper novels for our Denver club and half the room would show up having skimmed the summary on their phone, so nobody could argue about anything real. Back in March we started capping picks at 10 pages (basically short stories and essays), and our average meeting went from about 20 minutes of awkward silence to a full hour of actual back and forth. The first one we tried was a 9 page story and even our quietest member had a strong take on the ending. Now I'm wondering if we go back to full books at all, has anyone else tried a page limit and did it stick?
