Still think plot summaries are a waste in book club debates

I was at a meetup in Denver last month where this guy spent 15 minutes breaking down the plot of The Road. Everyone else was rolling their eyes but I actually found it useful because half the people hadn't finished the book yet. Sometimes you need that basic recap before you can argue about themes or symbolism. Has anyone else found a good way to handle newcomers who haven't finished the reading?

People skim everything in life now, books just get the same treatment.

My book club just uses SparkNotes for the first 5 minutes no shame in it
