That debate about the ending of The Great Gatsby got real awkward last night

Our book club has 8 members and we usually keep things chill, but last night we spent like 45 minutes arguing over whether Gatsby's death was karma or just bad luck. Things got heated when Karen said it was his own fault for chasing Daisy, and Mark basically called her out for missing the whole point about class struggle. How do you guys handle it when debates turn into personal attacks instead of talking about the book?

Robert64 is right, Mark totally tanked the evening. We had almost the exact same thing happen with my old book club over Of Mice and Men - one guy started saying Lennie was just a vicious animal and another member got super defensive and accused him of lacking empathy. The whole meeting just dissolved into people taking sides instead of talking about the book itself. Wish someone would have just said "hey, let's take a breath and get back to the text" before it got ugly.

Mark had a point but calling Karen out like that killed the whole conversation.
