Used to skip the historical notes in book club books, now I read them first.

For years I would just jump straight into chapter 1 because I wanted to get to the story. Then last month we read a novel set in 1920s Chicago and I got completely lost with all the slang and politics. A friend in the club pointed me to the author's note at the back that explained everything. Now I always flip to the end before starting, it makes the whole book click better. Has anyone else had a book suddenly make way more sense after reading the background stuff?

@dakotab13 I bet you never skipped them either! Man, that Chicago book sounds like a mess to jump into blind. Did it have a glossary in the back for the slang, or was it all in one big author note? I hate when they bury the important stuff in different places.
