Vent: blew $70 on a box of "annotated" classics and my book club won't touch them
So last month I got roped into hosting our club's pick and panicked, right? I'd watched a YouTube video where some professor swore by these fancy annotated editions with maps and footnotes on every page, so I dropped $70 on a box set of four. Half of the group showed up with the $9 paperback and didn't care about any of the extra stuff. Then Dana pipes up that the notes actually spoil plot points early, and now people are mad at me like I picked the trap on purpose. We spent 20 minutes arguing about whether annotations help a first read or ruin it, and zero minutes on the actual story. I'm out 70 bucks and my turn is basically ruined. So which side are you on, do notes in the margins make a book better or should the author just trust us?
So you lost 70 bucks and your book club spent one meeting bickering instead of reading, that's a bad Tuesday, not a tragedy. Let them read the cheap copy, keep your fancy set for yourself, and next time pick something everyone can grab for ten bucks.
