Warning: my club picked a 900 page book and only 4 people finished it

We voted on 'The Count of Monte Cristo' back in January and by our meeting at Dana's place in Portland only 4 of us made it past page 400. Why do people vote for huge books if they know they won't read them, or am I the jerk for saying we need a page limit?
