Found out my 35 degree sleeping bag rating was a lie on a 28 degree night in Flagstaff
I always wondered why I woke up shivering on trips that were well above the temp on the bag tag. Turns out that rating is the survival limit, not the comfort limit, and I had been buying bags wrong for three seasons. What temp do you all actually trust for a good night's sleep?
Did you ever check the bag after a few years of use? I ask because I had a similar thing happen but it turned out my bag was just old. I bought a 20 degree bag in 2019 and by last winter it was useless below 40. The fill gets crushed down over time and loses its loft, especially if you store it stuffed in the sack instead of hanging it loose. So even if you buy the comfort rating right, a worn out bag will still leave you cold. I hang mine in the closet now and it made a real difference on my last trip.
