I spent a week in Yosemite last July during that heatwave, and my cheap cooler turned all my food into lukewarm mush by day two. Has anyone else had a trip where your gear failures taught you more than any product review could?

Totally bought into the hype on those fancy insulated water bottles until my friend's basic metal one stayed cold all day while my expensive one sweated all over my bag. That trip made me realize I was spending money on features I didn't actually need instead of just solid construction. I used to think you had to spend big to get good gear, but now I look for simpler stuff that just works. Like my old beat-up backpack that survived getting dragged through a river is way more reliable than the sleek new one I replaced it with. The real lesson was that durability and function matter way more than looking like you're prepared.

Hear you on the hype thing but I think good gear can still be worth it if you do your homework. My expensive bottle keeps ice for 36 hours in direct sun, it's just that a lot of brands charge for looks instead of real performance. You got burned by a bad product, not by the idea of spending more for quality.
