Wait, does it leave any smell or residue on the poles? My buddy tried something like this with his bike rack and the sheets basically melted onto the metal in the heat, total mess. He ended up just wrapping the contact points in a bit of old inner tube instead and that did the trick. But for a tent pole that stays mostly out of the sun maybe the sheets hold up better, idk.
Laughing at the image of your buddy's bike rack turning into a melted marshmallow situation. That's the classic "it seemed like a good idea at the time" move we've all pulled. Tent poles are a different deal though since they don't sit in blazing sun all day like a rack on a car. Mine have been fine so far, no goo, no weird smell, nothing stuck to the metal. Give it a shot but maybe keep that inner tube trick in your back pocket just in case.
