TIL that 'waterproof' sleeping bag rating is basically a lie
Buddy from work told me to ignore the IP ratings on sleeping bag covers and just buy a bivy sack. Didn't listen. Took my $200 bag with a 10,000mm rating out in a light rain last weekend near Lake Tahoe. Woke up soaked at 3am. Bag said waterproof but it just soaked through. Had to sleep in my truck. Anyone else get burned by these fake ratings?

Honestly, "waterproof" and "10,000mm rating" sounds impressive until you're literally sleeping in a puddle inside your own bag. That's not a rating, that's a suggestion. I think the industry just slaps those numbers on there and hopes we don't actually test them in real rain. You'd have better luck wrapping yourself in a trash bag next time, at least you'd stay dry for a few hours.

Bet that 10,000mm rating kept you way drier than any trash bag would have in the same storm.
