Trusted that REI guy about sleeping pads, froze my butt off near Flagstaff

He said the R-value on my old foam pad was fine for 40 degrees, but it dropped to 28 that night in the Coconino forest. Woke up shivering at 3am with my hips numb, now I always check the actual temp forecast before packing. Anyone else had a store employee steer you wrong on gear?
