Why does nobody talk about how tent waterproof ratings are basically meaningless?

My $400 tent listed a 3000mm rating leaked on me during a storm in the Smokies last month, but my buddy's cheap Walmart tent with no rating stayed bone dry. Are the numbers just marketing fluff, or does application method matter more than the spec?

Are the numbers just marketing fluff" is exactly what I think... had a buddy who bought some fancy tent with a 5000mm rating and it soaked through on a light drizzle in the Cascades, but his old Coleman with no number at all stayed dry as a bone inside. I think how you set it up and where you pitch it matters way more than that number on the box.

Damn, 5000mm failing in a light drizzle in the Cascades? That's nuts. I've seen cheap tarps hold up better in a downpour. @jade226 your buddy got sold a bill of goods for sure. Pitch and site selection beat any number on a tag every time, especially when you're dealing with wet coastal weather like that.
