Picked up a tip from a trucker at a diner about black ice

I was eating breakfast at a little diner off I-80 in Ohio last week and overheard two truckers talking. One of them said if you ever hit black ice and start sliding, don't touch the brake at all. He said just take your foot off the gas and steer into the slide gently. I always thought you were supposed to pump the brakes or something. That stuck with me because I drive a rear-wheel drive sedan and winter is coming fast. I tried looking it up later and found out he was right for most modern cars with ABS. Has anyone else gotten driving advice from random strangers that ended up being solid?

So, did he also tell you what to do with a manual transmission on ice?

Read somewhere that feathering the clutch helps on ice, @barbaraschmidt.
