My first perfboard build died in 20 seconds, now I check solder joints with a magnifier first

Last Tuesday in my garage, I finished a fuzz pedal on perfboard. Plugged it in, got a loud hum then nothing. No LED, no sound, just dead. I spent an hour guessing caps and transistors. Turns out two legs on the IC socket had cold joints. I pushed on the board and the fuzz kicked in for a second. Now every build gets a 10 minute visual pass with a cheap 10x loupe before I even touch power. Has anyone else had a build die from something this dumb? What's your go-to first check when a fresh build does nothing?

Hit 250 stompboxes built, my workbench has its own gravity pull

I just finished boxing up number 250 since I started making my own pedals back in 2016, and honestly I didn't see that count coming. That's 250 enclosures drilled, 250 sets of knobs wired, and probably around 1800 feet of 22 gauge wire stuffed into tight spaces. My ears are half shot from testing with a cheap practice amp at 2am, but the scratch of a fresh 3PDT switch click still does it for me. The funny part is my bench is now a permanent mess of solder wick and flux residue, and I swear the whole room tilts slightly toward where I keep the drill press. Most of these were clones or mods for local buddies, but about 40 went out to folks I only know through a forum similar to this one. Anyone else ever hit a build count that made them stop and go 'huh, where did the last 8 years go'?

The clutch setting made it way easier to control the depth, and the battery lasted through three full pedal builds without a recharge. I still use the press for bigger jobs, but that little drill has cut my setup time in half. Has anyone else had luck with a budget drill for metal work, or is there a better trick for hand drilling straight holes?

Swapped my breadboard layout for perfboard after my 3rd failed fuzz pedal

I used to spend every Friday night cramming components onto a solderless breadboard, testing circuits with jumper wires everywhere. It worked fine until I tried to box up a fuzz face clone and the whole thing fell apart when I moved it. So last month in Austin, I bought a roll of perfboard and some 24 gauge wire and started building direct on that. Now I solder point to point with a simple layout sketch, and it takes me maybe 2 hours instead of 6 with way less debugging. The connections are solid and I can actually test it inside the enclosure before sealing it up. Has anyone else made this switch and found a good trick for planning the trace paths without a schematic software?

Hand-wired vero vs PCB copy, the noise floor told the story

My clone build broke the tuner, should have stuck with the kit

I spent 4 nights wiring up a Klon clone on perfboard instead of just buying the kit with the PCB. Everything looked fine until I hit the power switch and the tuner just stopped reading, turns out my ground trace lifted because I bent a resistor leg too hard. The kit would have cost 35 bucks more but it would have saved me two hours of tracing with a multimeter and a trip to the parts store for a new switch. Is it worth doing the stripboard thing when you're starting out, or am I just making extra work for myself?

Wired my first fuzz pedal backwards for 6 months...

Bought a cheap mini drill press, thought it would be junk, it actually works great

I was skeptical about spending $60 on a no-name mini drill press from Amazon for my pedal enclosures. I figured the runout would be terrible and I'd have to fight it every time. After drilling maybe 50 holes in 1 aluminum boxes last weekend, it's been super consistent and the depth stop is way more accurate than my hand drill. I'm not saying it's pro gear, but for hobby builds it holds up fine. Has anyone else had luck with bargain tools that everyone says to avoid?

Don't trust those pre-made PCB boards from the random overseas shops

I grabbed 5 boards from a seller on AliExpress for like $23 to prototype a fuzz circuit, saved maybe 3 days of etching. After wiring the third one up, the trace under the footswitch pad lifted clean off, the copper just peeled with the solder. Checked the other four with a magnifier and half the pads were barely attached, one had a bridge I didn't even place. I'm back to etching my own boards now, that 3 hours of sanding is way better than chasing a phantom short. Anyone else had QC issues with budget PCBs, or did I just hit a bad batch?

Stop using that $10 solder sucker before you wreck a board

I used the same blue plastic solder sucker for 2 years because it was cheap and simple. Last week I tried to clear a joint on a vintage MXR build and it yanked a trace clean off the PCB, gone. Switched to a vacuum desoldering station from a pawn shop in Austin for $45 and it pulls solder clean in one shot. The sucker works fine for big pads, but on tight little spots it is a risk I will not take anymore. Anyone else lost a board to a cheap sucker or am I the only one who learned the hard way?

Spent $60 on a breadboard kit and half the parts were junk

Ordered one of those starter breadboard kits with resistors and ICs for a fuzz build, but the potentiometers were so scratchy they made my signal sound like a dying radio. One comment about my solder bridges totally rewired how I work

About 6 months back I posted a pic of a fuzz pedal I built, this little vero board thing with a bunch of jumper wires everywhere. Some guy commented, not mean or anything, just said 'lots of exposed leads there, you'll chase shorts forever.' I brushed it off at first. Then I had to debug a nasty squeal on a different build two weeks later, and guess what, it was a solder bridge under a 3PDT switch I couldn't even see. I spent 4 hours with a multimeter and a magnifying lamp in my basement in Akron. Now I cut all my component leads super short, like flush with the board, and I use insulated wire for every jumper, no bare copper. My $40 expresso machine amp build had a surprising ground loop fix

I built a tiny practice amp inside a dead espresso machine last month, wired everything like my usual Fender Champ circuit. My reverb tank gave out mid-solo at an open mic in Portland

I was testing my spring reverb build at an open mic last Saturday when the tank just stopped making sound after the first chorus. It worked fine for two weeks at home, but the second I moved it to the venue, the input cable on the tank must have shifted and shorted the signal. My $40 breadboard meter was lying to me the whole time
