Spent an afternoon soldering that fancy Fuzz Face clone from a small builder, plugged it in, and got nothing but thin static. Anyone else had luck with those premium kits or should I stick to my usual stripboard builds?

I was reading up on building my first fuzz pedal last night and found out that lead-free solder actually needs like 30-40 degrees higher heat to flow properly. My cheap iron only goes to 700F so I've probably been borderline melting joints for two years. Has anyone else run into trouble switching between solder types mid-build?

Why does nobody talk about using salvaged speaker wire for pedal builds?

So last month I was digging through a pile of old stereo gear a guy was tossing out behind a shop in Portland, and I grabbed about 30 feet of pure copper speaker wire from a 90s Pioneer receiver. It was thick, stranded, and perfect for my fuzz pedal wiring. Three years ago I would have scoffed at using anything but new shielded cable from the electronics store. But now I'm wondering if I've been wasting money this whole time. The solder joints felt smoother and the hum was actually less than my usual build. But on the flip side, I had to strip and tin each strand twice as long because the insulation was stiff and cracked in spots. Is it worth the hassle of salvaging for the savings? Or is new wire really that much better for long term reliability? I'm genuinely torn on this and want to hear what you guys have experienced with recycled materials.

Last Tuesday I finished a fuzz face clone from a tagboard layout I found on a forum, plugged it in, and it sounded perfect. No debugging, no swapping transistors, no checking for cold solder joints. My $30 transistor tester instantly fried, showing random numbers and now it won't even turn on. Has anyone else wrecked a multimeter or component tester by forgetting to disconnect power first?

I disagree that you need a fancy enclosure to make a good pedal

Saw a post last week saying you have to use a powder coated Hammond box or your build is junk. I've been building pedals for about 2 years now and I just use old tin boxes from cigar shops. They cost like $2 and I drill them with a hand drill. My fuzz face clone sounds exactly the same as one in a $15 enclosure. I get it if you want looks, but calling it trash because of the box seems snobby to me. Has anyone else just used random household metal boxes and had it work fine?

I started building guitar pedals as a hobby about three years ago. Last month I finished my 50th build, which is just a Fuzz Face clone on perfboard. Nothing special. I tried that nickel shielding paint from StewMac on a fuzz build last weekend, and it cut the 60-cycle hum way more than I expected. I A/B'd a $60 commercial fuzz against my hand-wired version using the exact same schematic and the difference was night and day. My build had way more punch and clarity, probably from using carbon comp resistors and a real germanium transistor instead of surface mount parts. Has anyone else noticed how much better their DIY pedals sound than the factory stuff?
