A buddy in Boston made me rethink my whole test rig setup

I was showing him my latest overdrive build on a breadboard with alligator clips everywhere, and he just laughed and said 'you're measuring the clips, not the circuit.' That hit me pretty hard. So I spent about 40 bucks on a proper enclosure mount and a simple switching jack, and suddenly my signal chain was way quieter. It took me like 3 months of chasing hum and tone loss before that conversation. Has anyone else had a similar moment where someone pointed out the obvious flaw in their testing method?
