Built a fuzz pedal on stripboard to save $60. Now I know why people buy kits.
Two months ago I got the itch to build a Fuzz Face clone and sat there staring at two carts. One was a full kit with a pre-drilled enclosure and a real PCB for about $85. The other was a bag of loose parts and a sheet of stripboard for $22. I picked the cheap one because how hard could it be. The circuit fired up on the first try, which felt great for about an hour. Then I spent three weekends chasing a hum that turned out to be a ground loop from the jacks touching the bare aluminum box. After that the footswitch popped so loud it sounded like a snare hit, and I had to add two resistors I did not plan for. Total spent ended up around $70 with the extra parts and a second enclosure after I drilled the first one crooked. The pedal sounds good now, real wooly and mean, but I could have been playing it a month earlier. Has anyone here gone the stripboard route and actually stuck with it, or did you all cave and buy the PCB like I probably should have?
