Hot take: building a fuzz pedal from a kit vs scratch is totally different worlds

I built my first fuzz from a kit about 8 years ago in my garage in Portland, just following instructions like a robot. Last month I tried my hand at a scratch-build on perfboard and spent 6 hours troubleshooting a bad solder joint that turned out to be a cold joint on the transistor leg. Has anyone else found that switching from kits to scratch builds made you appreciate the circuit design way more?

Nah, I gotta push back on this one. Kits and scratch builds are basically the same thing with extra steps. You're still soldering the same components into the same layout, just maybe picking your own caps or resistors. The circuit design appreciation comes from actually studying schematics and breadboarding, not from dealing with perfboard frustration. I learned way more by modding a prebuilt pedal and seeing what each cap swap actually did to the tone. Honestly, getting a kit to work cleanly taught me more about good soldering habits than my scratch build ever did.
