Just realized building a fuzz pedal from a kit vs vero board layout is a completely different game
Spent 3 months building fuzz faces from those cheap Chinese kits. Took me 2 hours each and they worked first try. Then I tried to do a Fuzz Factory clone on vero board using a layout from tagboard effects. Took me 6 hours spread over a week and I had to reflow every single joint twice. The vero board one sounds way better though. More noise and the biasing actually works how I want. Kits are fine for getting started but layouts force you to learn why each component matters. Has anyone else found vero builds just sound more alive?

A lot of people say vero builds sound more alive but I wonder if it's just the extra time and frustration making you appreciate it more. Those cheap kits use perfectly fine components, the difference is probably in the soldering quality and layout rather than some magical mojo. If you blindfolded me in a shootout, I doubt I could tell the difference between a kit build and a vero build once they're both boxed up.

Tbh have you ever actually compared them side by side with the same transistors though?
