That pop when I plugged in my first DIY fuzz at a show in Austin and the crowd just stared
Back around 2011 I built a fuzz pedal on a strip of perfboard in my garage in Austin, and I was so proud of it until I plugged it in at a buddy's house show and got nothing but a loud hum and radio bleed from a local AM station. I had wired the input jack backwards, so the signal was going straight to ground, and I didn't figure it out until my friend's roommate, who was an actual EE student, poked around with a multimeter for like 20 minutes. The whole crowd of maybe 15 people just stood there watching me panic while I yanked the back off the enclosure and flipped the two wires with a pocket knife because I forgot my soldering iron. I got it working right as the next band was loading in, so I never even got to play it that night. What I learned is to always test a new build through a little practice amp in the garage before trusting it in public, and to draw my wiring layout on paper first instead of just winging it from memory. Now I keep a cheap multimeter and a spare 9v in my gig bag no matter what. Anyone else have a first build that totally flopped in front of people, or am I the only one who wire jacks backwards like a rookie?
