Wasted $60 on a boutique fuzz kit that didn't even work

Bought this fancy fuzz pedal kit from a small builder in Oregon. Sounded amazing in the demo videos. Spent a whole Sunday soldering it together only to find out the PCB had a bad trace. The builder ghosted me when I asked for a replacement. Anyone else get burned by a pedal kit that looked good but was actually junk?

Grabbed a cheap kit from a local shop after my boutique one crapped out. Ended up replacing the whole board with a different design I found online for like $10. I had to redo the wiring twice but it finally worked. Made me realize those fancy kits look cool but the simpler ones just work better out of the box. Did you try swapping the PCB for a generic one?

Question whether it's really that deep though. A PCB swap is a PCB swap, whether it cost $10 or $80. The boutique one probably just had a bad solder joint or a faulty cap, not some magic design flaw. Everyone acts like these fancy boards are fragile treasures, but most of the time they fail from basic wear or a bad batch of parts. If the cheap one works after rewiring, good for you, but that doesn't mean the expensive one was worse, it just means you got unlucky. Fixing it with a generic part is fine, but don't act like you uncovered some hidden truth about the whole market.
