My new phone's screen went completely black during a video call with my mom

I was sitting at my kitchen table in Austin last Tuesday, halfway through showing her my new apartment, when the display just died. The phone was a week old, a model I'd picked based on glowing reviews about its camera. I could hear her voice, but the screen stayed dark no matter what button I pressed. After a panicked 10 minutes, I found a forum post suggesting a specific button combo to force a restart, which finally worked. Has anyone else had a flagship gadget fail in such a basic way right out of the box?

That exact thing happened with my last laptop, black screen during a setup. It's such a gut punch with a brand new device. You spend all that time researching and then get a paperweight. Glad the hard reset worked, but it really shouldn't be necessary on day one. Makes you wonder about quality control.

My three year old tablet did the same black screen trick. You just expect better from expensive tech these days. Feels like they rush things out the door.
