My old phone used to die by 2pm, but after switching to a new model it's still at 40% at bedtime.

I had a Galaxy S10 for three years and the battery life got really bad, needing a charge every afternoon. I got a Pixel 8 last month and the difference is night and day, I think it's the new processor. Has anyone else seen a big jump in battery life from a similar upgrade?

Totally get that. My old phone was the same way. The new chips are way more power efficient. It makes a huge difference for daily use. Glad the upgrade worked out for you.

Jumping off what you're saying, I've noticed this same thing with so many things in life. Like with cars, people rave about a new engine that gets two more miles per gallon but you're still stuck in the same traffic every morning. Or kitchen gadgets, everyone goes crazy over a new blender that blends a little smoother but your oatmeal still tastes the same. It feels like we get sold on these tiny improvements that are supposed to change our whole day but really just make us feel like we need to keep up with the latest thing. The real upgrade for me was just getting a phone that didn't crash anymore, not the chip inside it.

Way more power efficient" feels like such a stretch. It's just a phone. The old one got me through the day and this one does too, maybe with a bit less battery anxiety. I don't really notice a "huge difference" in what I actually do with it. It feels like we're told to care about specs that don't change the real experience much.
