My smart lock bricked itself at 2 AM and I was locked out for hours

So my fancy keypad lock on the front door just died last night. No warning, no low battery beep, nothing. I got home from a late movie and the screen was just black, wouldn't respond to the code or the backup key. Had to call a 24 hour locksmith in Phoenix, cost me $180 to get back in. The whole time I'm sitting on the porch thinking about how I paid extra for this 'reliable' tech. The locksmith said he sees this all the time with these newer electronic locks, especially after a firmware update goes wrong. Now I'm back to using a regular deadbolt. Anyone else have a smart home gadget fail so hard it made you go back to the old way?

Noticed this same pattern with my printer, my thermostat, even my coffee machine. An update drops and suddenly the thing acts like it forgot how to do its one job. Seems like every company thinks we want everything "smart" but they stop caring once they ship it. Basic dumb hardware just works, no surprise updates breaking it at 2am.

Honestly same thing happened to me last year. Tbh I just keep a hidden key outside now, like barbaraschmidt said, makes you rethink the whole smart thing. Back to a basic lock and it feels way less stressful.
