Why does nobody talk about the sound quality on those cheap fitness trackers?

I left a review for a $35 tracker saying the step count was fine, but a guy replied asking if I'd ever actually listened to the audio prompts. I tried it and they sounded like a robot underwater, so now I always test the speaker before buying anything. How do you even check that stuff in a store?

Bring your own wired earbuds to the store and ask to pair the demo unit. Play a voice memo or a podcast clip through it, not just music. Music can hide how bad the speech sounds.

It's wild how many products get away with trash speakers now. Feels like they're cutting corners everywhere except the marketing.
